Music Featured at the Arts and Wine Festival
Music will be an important component of the upcoming Arts and Wine Festival on Saturday August 4 in Cortland's Courthouse Park. A Classical Music Festival will begin at 10am and run through 5pm under a tent next to the WWI memorial at the center of the park. This will include classical as well as international music and musical theater. The music is free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and the kids. This is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy classical music in an informal outdoor setting.
The music is being organized by Cortland Music, the same group that has presented the Classical Music Festivals at the Blue Frog Coffeehouse over the past few years. One of the goals of the festival series is to raise the visibility of local musicians, especially those who play in styles that are less popular, such as classical music. Musicians include established local professionals as well as up-and-coming professionals, amateurs and students.
The Classical Music Festival series is supported by the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Additional support was obtained through a NYSCA Decentralization Grant sponsored by St. Mary's Church in Cortland and administered by the Cultural Resources Council of Onondaga County.
As usual, there will be some newcomers to the series: Tekla Babyak, a graduate student in musicology at Cornell University will play classical works for solo piano. Tina Shattuck will join festival musician Maria Mucaria in music for the flute. Sharon and Bill Holbert will present songs of Broadway. Mary Sugar, who directed the College Singers during the spring semester at SUNY Cortland will be joined by some of her students in works for musical theater.
The festival will begin at 10am with the Crown City Brass performing in styles that range from the Renaissance through Sondheim. Then Emmanuel Sikora, a young composer attending Cortland High School, will present some of his compositions for piano. Emmanuel's recent composition "The Shadow Rose" was selected to be performed at the All State NYSSMA festival in Rochester this coming November. Emmanuel will be followed by two members of the Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York. Dave Richman's presentation will include music of Vincent Emilio Sojo and Hector Villa Lobos. Chris Woodard will pick up his steel string guitar when playing music from the Celtic tradition. Then Gina Sikora (soprano) and Stephen B. Wilson (piano) will feature the Tangos of Argentina including music of Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla.
At 12 noon, Maria Mucaria (flute) and Marina Gorelaya (piano) will present Bach's Suite in B minor as well as music from Carmen by Bizet and the Piccolo Polka by Eugene DeAmare. Mucaria will then be joined by Aaron Baier (guitar) and Tina Shattuck (flute) in some folk arrangements. Following this, Tekla Babyak will perform works for solo piano, including the music of Aaron Copland and J.S. Bach.
At 2pm, Mary Sugar and students from SUNY Cortland will feature vocal works from musical theater. They will be followed by Lois Pfister (violin) and Marina Gorelaya (piano) performing classical compositions, including the Slavonic Fantasie by Dvorak and the Romanian Folk Dances by Bartok . Last on the program will be Sharon Holbert (soprano) and Bill Holbert (baritone) who will be accompanied by Gorelaya in Broadway classics.
